Gentian violet is a cationic triphenylmethane dye, usually identified as hexamethylpararosaniline chloride. Its chemical formula is C25H30ClN3. The 1% aqueous solution of gentian violet typically appears as a deep blue or violet-colored liquid. Gentian violet is sparingly soluble in water but dissolves readily in alcohol or acetone.
