Applications
- In histology, it is used as an oxidizing agent and staining reagent.
- It is used in decolorization of tissue sections after silver staining such as Golgi or Bielschowsky staining, to remove excess silver deposits and to clarify the background of the stained tissue.
- It is used to pretreat cellular structures such as lipofuscin for Schiff’s reagent staining. By oxidizing lipids and proteins, it also increases contrast in electron microscopy applications, resulting in better visualization of cell structures.
Benefits
- Suitable for staining
- Improved contrast in electron microscopy
- It is less aggressive than higher concentrations, making it more suitable for sensitive applications
