Applications:
Biological Staining: Evans Blue is commonly used as a biological stain in various applications. It can be employed to stain and visualize blood vessels, especially in microcirculation studies. It binds to plasma proteins and can be used to trace blood flow, vascular permeability, or leakage in experimental models.Blood-Brain Barrier Studies: Evans Blue is widely used in neuroscience and pharmacology research to study the blood-brain barrier (BBB). It can be injected into experimental animals, and its ability to bind to albumin allows researchers to assess the integrity and permeability of the BBB in different conditions or disease models.Cell Viability Assays: Evans Blue can be used in certain cell viability assays. It can selectively bind to dead or damaged cells, allowing for the quantification of cell death or cytotoxicity in cell culture experiments.Perfusion Studies: Evans Blue can be utilized in perfusion studies to assess tissue perfusion or blood flow. By injecting Evans Blue dye into the circulatory system and observing its distribution, researchers can evaluate the perfusion status of organs or tissues.Dye Tracer in Experimental Models: Evans Blue is often employed as a dye tracer in various experimental models. It can be used to track the movement or distribution of fluids or substances in biological systems, including animal models and in vitro setups.

Evans blue is a potent inhibitor of L-glutamate uptake into synaptic vesicles via EAAT. Evans Blue also inhibits AMPA and kainate receptor-mediated currents (IC50 values are 220 and 150 nM respectively). The compound is also a P2X-selective purinoceptor antagonist. Used as a dye, Evans blue reduces unwanted fluorescence due to the conjugation and auto fluorescence of structural elements in the tissue or cells.
