Applications:
Lipid Staining: Oil Red O is widely used for the staining and visualization of lipids in various biological samples. It can be employed in histology, cytology, and microscopy to identify and differentiate lipid-rich structures, such as adipocytes or lipid droplets, in tissues or cells.Adipogenesis Studies: Oil Red O is commonly used in research related to adipogenesis, the process of fat cell formation and differentiation. It allows for the quantification and visualization of lipid accumulation in cultured cells or in vivo models, aiding in the study of adipocyte development and function.Quality Control: Oil Red O may be used in quality control processes in industries where lipid analysis or staining is performed. It can serve as a reference standard or control sample to ensure consistent staining results and the proper functioning of staining protocols.Research and Development: Oil Red O is employed in various research and development activities, particularly in studies related to lipid metabolism, obesity, and related disorders. It enables the visualization and quantification of lipid content in experimental models and aids in the investigation of lipid-related processes.

Oil Red O stains lipids and is commonly used to analyze muscle fibers. Studies have combined using muscle cross sections with immunofluorescence microscopy to visualize and identify muscle fiber type specific intramyocellular lipids (IMCL) using Oil Red O. Sertoli cell research reports using Oil Red O staining to study the association between lipid droplet formation and the phagocytosis of apoptotic spermatogenic cells in vitro. Oil Red O does not stain unesterified cholesterol and can also be used to stain alveolar macrophages.
