- Xylenes ACS is used as solvent and thinner, and as a cleaning agent.
- It is used in the laboratory in conjunction with dry ice to act as a coolant.
- It is used as a solvent in the tetraphosphine/palladium-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling with sterically hindered aryl halides and arylboronic acids to synthesize tri-ortho-substituted biaryl adducts.
- It is used as a solvent for the N-alkylation of amines or ammonia with alcohols to synthesize N-alkyl amines.
